February is American Heart Month, and in recognition, National Park Medical Center is helping area residents know more about their own heart health through a free event called “Know Your Numbers.” The event, which will be held over a two day period, will feature cholesterol, blood glucose, blood pressure and body mass index screenings, along with information about heart healthy diets, cardiovascular exercise tips and the link between sleep health and heart disease.
“Knowing your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels is an important step to good heart health,” says Hot Springs Cardiology Associates Nurse Practitioner, Lindsey Cortez, APN. “So many heart health issues go undetected and can significantly worsen because individuals don’t necessarily feel badly. But taking the proactive step to know whether you need to improve your cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar or BMI is a great way to lower the risk of heart disease, or treat it early if it is detected.”
The “Know Your Numbers” event will be held Monday, February 18th and Thursday, February 21st from 7-11:00 am. When individuals call to register, they will be given an appointment time to show up to the screening event. They will receive a form in the mail to complete prior to the event as well.
It is important for individuals receiving the screenings to fast the morning of the event, so that their readings are accurate. This means no food or drink (besides water) after midnight before the screening. There will be a healthy breakfast served at the event, and a registered dietician on-site with heart healthy eating tips and information.
Also at the event, cardiovascular exercise tips for all fitness levels, and a representative of the NPMC Center for Sleep Disorders will have information on the effects that bad sleep can have on one’s heart health.
The NPMC “Know Your Numbers” event is free, but space is limited and registration is required. To register for your time to attend this valuable event, call 620-1402.
